Expertise: Harnessing Waste Energy, Landfill Gas Power Generation

Anita studied at Ryerson University in Canada. She was the CEO and Managing Director of AZN Construction in Canada, before moving to the UAE with her husband and two children in 2008 with a passion for the Environment and building a Sustainable Future. The flagship project - Al Qusais Landfill Gas Flaring and Power Generation is a registered large scale CDM project #8269 with the UNFCCC. Green Energy Solutions & Sustainability LLC has established itself as a leader in the region. The sales and monetization of Carbon Credits to Norway, GESS has achieved another milestone. Through the continued support of their investment partners in the UAE, GESS is targeting landfills and providing environmental solutions.

Al Qusais landfill is under the jurisdiction of Dubai Municipality, and is currently the only landfill in the Middle East to produce power from landfill gas. “As entrepreneurs we are proud that this standalone project is setting the benchmark in the region for alternative energy. The Al Qusais landfill site operations and the Dubai Municipality site operations are all being powered by the landfill gas”. “Our goal is not to create more landfills but to optimize the existing ones and create a source of power for the long term. Supporting the vision of Dubai Municipality to create a better life for the citizens of Dubai” Currently the development of the closed Jebel Ali landfill site and Phase 2 of Al Qusais site to 20 Mw has begun.

Green Energy Solutions & Sustainability LLC was awarded the Bronze Award for Small Energy Project of the Year from the Supreme Council of Energy for 2015. The Award was handed by His Highness Sheikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum and H.E. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA. GESS has also been recognized and awarded “Green Initiative of the Year 2014” and “Sustainable Project of the Year” 2015 and 2016 for three consecutive years at the Big Project Middle East Construction and Sustainability Awards for the Al Qusais Landfill. GESS is targeting landfill gas projects in the region, all landfills must be degassed and that gas can provide power that is a sustainable source of renewable energy.

GESS was established in October of 2011 with the implementation of the Al Qusais landfill site as a showcase that was achieved through hard work and an unwavering vision. GESS is now developing other sites across the UAE and the MENA region to duplicate this initiative. A second project is under development in Ras Al Khaimah

Title: Harnessing Waste Energy - Landfill Gas Power Generation

The region as a whole is still land-filling waste and even though there is a push towards reducing the amount of waste that is land-filled the reality is that landfills emit harmful Green House Gases and those gases can be captured and utilized to generate power to the grid. Al Qusais is our showcase project and we are currently generating enough power to run our facility and support the Municipality landfill operations. We are developing the next phase that will hopefully generate 20 plus Mw electricity to the grid.

The project is registered and a large scale CDM. It is the only project that has a signed ERPA and is selling credits.
