Prof. Makarand Ghangrekar is a Civil Engineer and he obtained Ph.D. in Environmental Science & Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.  Since 1996 he is involved in teaching and research in the field of Environmental Engineering. At present he is working as a Professor of Environmental Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India. His subject interest for teaching and research includes water and wastewater treatment, wastewater reuse, anaerobic wastewater treatment, bioenergy recovery from waste, and bioelectrochemistry. He is recipient of European Union Marie Curie Fellowship for experienced scientist twice to work as a Visiting Scientist at University of New Castle upon Tyne, UK and Ben Gurion University, Israel.  He is a recipient of National Design Award conferred by Institution of Engineers, India for development of low cost microbial fuel cell in the year 2012. He received Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship for short visit to Germany in the year 2013. He received three best papers awards by Institution of Engineers, India.He has undertaken consultancy and research projects sponsored by Indian and foreign agencies. He is known for his contribution in developing anaerobic wastewater treatment technologies and he has designed and commissioned many upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors for treatment of industrial effluents in India and abroad. He is a member and Asia Region representative of anaerobic digestion specialist group of International Water Association (IWA). Presently he is working on development of low cost microbial fuel cell to generate direct electricity using wastewater as fuel.  He has published 104 papers in Journals, presented 170 papers in the conferences and contributed 13 book chapters. Eight students have completed their Ph.D. under his supervision and presently eleven research scholars are working with him mainly on the theme bioenergy recovery from the wastewaters and reuse of the treated water.
