Biography:

Dr. Sulaiman is currently Associate Professor of Ocean Engineering and coordinator for Maritime Technology International Program, University Malaysia Terengganu. His specialization is in Safety/Environmental Risk Management and Reliability for Maritime and Ocean Systems, Marine Energy and Environment, Sustainable Maritime Technology System Design and Inland Water Transportations. He is currently conducting research on marine hybrid alternative energy system and seaweed farming, greenhouse gas emission inventory from marine system and climate change control technology, offshore and near coastal aquaculture systems technology, seaweed base marine biofuel technology systems. He is a Chattered Engineer registered under UK Engineering Council with diverse academic and professional background. He started his career as Engineer officer on a ship. He has taught and mentor marine courses and research projects on contemporary issues in maritime and Ocean Engineering field. He has also authored and co-authored a total of more than 150 publications. He has a file patent on research work on marine green technology. Dr Olanrewaju is also an editorial board member, reviewer and scientific committee of several international journals. He is editor of book chapter on “Marine Technology and Sustainable Development”. He has served in several working group technical committees. He has participated as observer to UN rule making for inland water transportation, sustainable energy, disaster risk reduction, water convention. He has collaborated with diverse international scholar on key research topics. He has organized and participated in international conferences. He is the member of Royal Institute of Naval Architecture (RINA), Biomass Society Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), PIANC, IEEE and ASME.

Title: Development of Offshore Aquaculture System Technology for Macroalgae (Seaweed) Seaweed Farming

Abstract:

Seaweed macroalage is increasingly becoming potential source of raw material for range of biotech products. The existing cultivation system for seaweed is not environmentally, socially and economically sustainable. In order for production to meet demand, it is necessary to develop sustainable technology for large scale farming in open sea. The paper presents development of reliable marine technologies for offshore oceanic seaweed. The paper also highlights the design and deployment of prototype system in Bidong Island, Terengganu during 2016 before monsoon. At the end of the monsoon period the prototype still stable in situ. Selected seaweed species with biofuel potential were test planted on the system and growth performance of the particular species was monitored. Bioremediation potential and suitability of growth of Gracilaria and Ulva on the system are examined. From the preliminary results, all three species were able to grow on the system indicated the designed system is feasible for biomass production of seaweed. The studies goal is to develop local capability and provide supplementary income to fishermen in rural areas by selling seaweed as a cash crop and enhanced effective use of ocean resources.
