Title: Smart Supplements and Blood Glucose in Bariatric Patients: A Retrospective Analysis


Despite 73% of patients in the Vitagene group having fasting glucose above healthy levels preoperatively, over the 8 month postoperative period every patient in the Vitagene group was able to reach a healthy fasting glucose level below 90 mg/dL. Though sleeve gastrectomy contributes to remission of diabetes and improvement of fasting glucose levels, the Vitagene group improved to a much greater extent than the control group. This was significant over the 4 month period, and the large p-value for the 8 month period can be explained by the low number of Vitagene patients with 8 month labs. The reason for the success of the Vitagene group could be explained by a number of factors. The Vitagene group received (i) supplements and dosages personalized using DNA analysis (ii) high quality pharmacy grade supplements and (iii) monthly deliveries of daily pack supplements that incentivized adherence. Smart supplements can improve glucose levels directly through therapeutic effects and indirectly by reducing incidence of vitamin and mineral deficiencies. This is contingent on both supplement quality and patient adherence. Adherence may be greatly improved by daily packets shipped directly to patients’ doorsteps every month. The Vitagene group took pharmacy grade supplements to avoid ingestion of additional sugars beyond diet, while the control group likely took supplements containing sugar fillers. This study provides a foundation with which to move forward with further prospective studies. Future studies should track patient adherence and evaluate the long-term (5-20 years postoperative) effects of smart supplement programs on both fasting glucose and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c).
