Biography: Dr. Savita R. Kulkarni was involved in teaching, training and research activities at the undergraduate and post graduate levels at Bombay College of Pharmacy in the capacity of reader in Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry for the past 30 years. The college received grants in aid, and is affiliated to University of Mumbai. She had retired from service in September 2017. She completed B. Sc. in Chemistry with Physics as a subsidiary subject in 1979 and stood twelfth in Mumbai University. She went on to complete B. Sc. (Tech.), M. Sc. (Tech.) & Ph. D. (Tech) in Pharmaceutical Sciences, and have been involved in teaching Natural Product Chemistry and several other allied subjects that are part of the Pharmacy curriculum. During her teaching tenure, she also held the position as Chairperson of the Syllabus Committee in the subject of Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry and Natural Product technology for B.Pharm and M.Pharm courses. Some of the Areas of Research interest include extraction, characterization, pharmacological evaluation of macromolecular phytochemicals such as porphyrins, lectins and micromolecular phytochemicals such as plumbagin, lawsone etc. naphthoquinone derivatives. Study of photodynamic antimicrobial & allied applications of PDT (photodynamic therapy) has been carried out using many photosensitizers, such as pheobhorbides , pheopytins, thiophene derivatives and quinone derivatives of natural origin.. The DBT grant has been received for development of ethosomal oral gel formulation of pheophorbide for oral photodynamic anticancer activity. Currently the research project has been in progress in the third and final year. Many research projects have been carried out to study therapeutic applications of phytochemicals and herbal formulations. Formulation & evaluation of the stable herbal dosage forms have been prepared and studied for applications.
