Biography:

Dr. Sylvia Agostini is a Researcher in Ecology at the "Science for Environment" Laboratory of the University of Corsica (French) since 2005, and President of the Scientific Council of the Corsican fishermen since 2007. She has been in charge of the creation of the first platform on the marine ecological engineering in Corsica Island in 2009: STELLA MARE (Sustainable Technologies for Littoral Aquaculture and Marine Research). Certified in 2011 by the French National Research Center (CNRS), she becomes the scientific head of the STELLA MARE structure.

Title: APLIM an Innovative method for Fish Early Stages identification: application in the Mediterranean Sea

Abstract:

The interest of studying fish post-larvae concerns their biology and ecology in the marine environment to better understand their functioning, but also to create management tools of this important compartment of fishes’ life cycle to halt the loss of biodiversity. Several studies highlights the importance of this fish early stage in dynamics of local populations, with a recruitment success depends mainly on the processes taking place during this life period when mortality is very high. Our work aims to develop techniques and tools to better identify the biodiversity of the complex post-larval stage. Indeed, the difficulty in studying post-larvae resides in fact that few researches have been done to date. Works on description and identification of this stage were performed on some Mediterranean species on dead individuals most of the time. Recent studies have been conducted in the North Western Mediterranean basin, they have allowed describing some species. However, they remain incomplete and we will attempt to enrich them.

APLIM (Alive Post-Larvae Identification Method) developed by an important program to reduce biodiversity loss in Mediterranean Sea (LIFE+ Nature & Biodiversity SUBLIMO) uses the combination of 3 techniques: (i) PCC (Post-larval Capture and Culture, Ecocean©), rearing; (ii) Photographic monitoring and (iii) Observation and description of new morphometric and/or pigmentary characteristics which allow us to identify species. This new method was tested on Mediterranean fishes concerning 22 families, 37 genera and 64 species monitored and confirmed the identification of 92% of post-larvae species caught alive.
