MariyamSuzana is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of public health, Faculty of Health Sciences of the Maldives National University. She coordinates and lectures for Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Research methodology modules for the Bachelors in Primary Health care program, Masters in Public Health program and Masters in nursing program run by the University. She supervises and mentors research students on diverse topics relating to the health of the Maldivian population and is the course coordinator for the Master of Public Health program. She is a member of the Academic review committee of the Faculty and a member of the Ethics committee of the University. Before joining the academia, she has worked at the Ministry of Health of the Maldives at policymaking level for over nine years in the areas of international health and health financing, specifically in the management of donor funded programs in health. Her experience coversa decade of both structural and policy changes in the health sector of the Maldives, such as the introduction of universal health care, decentralization and corporatization of health service delivery in the country. Internationally, her contributions cover several consultancies for the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the International Organization for Migration in projects related to the Maldivian health system. She has worked at the Ministry of Public Health of Thailand studying the Thai universal health programand was a post-doctoral fellow at the Department of global health and development of the London School of Hygiene and tropical medicine studying cross border health service seeking among small island developing states.
