Title: Antimicrobial Efficacy of Antibiotic Adsorbed Cotton Pieces


Antibiotic doses are prescribed by physicians in order to control pathogenic activities. Some pathogens become antimicrobial resistant and many drugs including antibiotics are associated with some side effects when they are administered to the human body. Hence either different antibiotics or high doses of the same antibiotic have to be used to counteract antimicrobial resistance. If an alternative method can be developed to make use antimicrobial activities of antibiotics, without administering into the human body, then the side effects associated with antibiotics can be minimized or eliminated. We used cefuroxime [(6R,7R)-3-{[(aminocarbonyl)oxy]methyl}-7-{[(2Z)-2-(2-furyl)-2-(methoxyimino) acetyl]amino}-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid], azithromycin [(2R,3S,4R,5R,8R,10R,11R,12S,13S,14R)-2-ethyl-3,4,10-trihydroxy-3,5,6,8,10,12,14-heptamethyl-15-oxo- 11-{[3,4,6-trideoxy-3-(dimethylamino)-β-D-xylo-hexopyranosyl]oxy}-1-oxa-6-azacyclopentadec-13-yl 2,6-dideoxy-3-C-methyl-3-O-methyl-α-L-ribo-hexopyranoside], metronidazole 2-(2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)ethanol], flucloxacillin; (2S,5R,6R)-6-[[3-(2-chloro-6-fluorophenyl)-5-methyl-1,2-oxazole-4-carbonyl]amino]-3,3-dimethyl-7-oxo-4-thia-1-azabicyclo[3.2.0]heptane-2-carboxylic acid and cefuroxime; 3-(carbamoyloxymethyl)-7-[[2-(furan-2-yl)-2-methoxyiminoacetyl]amino]-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid antibiotics to prepare antibiotic entrapped cotton gauzes. Cotton gauzes containing each of the antibiotic (separately) show clear inhibition zones for both E.coli and S.aureus bacteria but the size of the inhibition zone depend on the type of the antibiotic and the type of bacterium. The sterilized cotton gauze blanks do not show any antimicrobial activity. As explained, in detail, in the extended abstract, the different efficacies of antibiotics are explained using their molecular structures and mode of action on bacterial cells.
