Title: Childhood Obesity – A Global Public Health Challenge – School Interventions Experiences

Childhood obesity is a major public health crisis nationally and internationally. The prevalence of childhood obesity has increased over few years. It is caused by imbalance between calorie intake and calories utilized. There are supporting evidence that excessive sugar intake by soft drink, increased portion size, and steady decline in physical activity have been playing major roles in the rising rates of obesity all around the world. One or more factors (genetic, behavioral, and environmental) cause obesity in children. Physical, psychological, and social health problems are caused due to this pathology.
The key message is that childhood obesity is a global public health challenge, very difficult to treat and prevention is the greatest scientific approach.Prevention may be achieved through a variety of interventions targeting built environment, physical activity, and diet. Besides family, school is the best window of opportunity to prevent pediatric obesity, because of its capacityto influencing both, the diet and physical activity.
The purpose of this presentation is to address various factors that have impact on childhood obesity, a variety of personal clinic experiences, interventions and governmental actions addressing obesity and the challenges ahead for managing this epidemic. In Brazil our group developed the “Healthy School Program”, involving family, school, health professional and community. This action has been very successful and can be duplicated in several countries, both for its efficacy and its excellent cost effectiveness! All in all, there is an urgent need to initiate prevention and treatment of obesity in children.
