My research focuses on the gene function, pathogenesis mechanism and utilization of herpesviruses, particularly human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), human simplex virus I (HSV-1), and varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Using the neural progenitor/stem cells (NPCs) as the infection model, our group has identified multiple potential pathways of HCMV inducing neural maldevelopment, and characterized the involved mechanisms. Based on our experience on virology, our group has also established the platform to modify neurotropic virus to generate neuronal circuit tracing tools. Currently we mainly put our effort on developing novel anterograde tracing viral tool derived from HSV-1 strain H129 (H129). In addition, other herpesviruses, such as VZV, murine CMV (MCMV), simian varicella virus (SVV), etc., are also under further investigation. Multiple novel neuronal circuit tracers capable of anterogradely mapping multi- and mono-synaptic circuits with strong labeling intensity have been developed. And anterograde tracers for functional analysis is also under development.
